Job Opening: Special Projects Coordinator

Summary
The Cooperative Economics Alliance of NYC (CEANYC) seeks a Special Projects Coordinator (SPC) to assist in organizing our 2024 Solidarity Economy Spotlight series. The SPC will assist with programming and identifying speakers and facilitators through outreach to CEANYC membership and other movement partners. Another key responsibility will be to assist in project managing 4 online (or hybrid) sessions, with other tasks assigned as needed. The SPC will work 5-10 hours per week and will be compensated $50/hour. The SPC will work remotely and will schedule set hours to meet in-person with other CEANYC staff once per week. Funding has been secured to support this position for six months (from February to July, 2024), but there is potential for the position to grow and expand pending additional funding.

The Cooperative Economics Alliance of NYC is a cross-sectoral alliance owned and managed by its 125+ members, including: worker co-ops, food co-ops, community development credit unions, mutual housing, low-income housing co-ops, community land trusts, community gardens, community supported agriculture initiatives, and individual New Yorkers.

Our goal is to build an economy based on values of social and racial justice, ecological sustainability, cooperation, mutualism, and democracy. We currently strengthen and expand our member groups and networks through three major programming areas: Leadership Development and Technical Assistance, Policy and Advocacy, and Research and Visibility. 

 

Who You Are

CEANYC seeks a Special Projects Coordinator (SPC) who is passionate about social change and racial justice, and eager to build NYC’s solidarity economy. 

The SPC will be responsible for helping to plan and coordinate our 2024 Solidarity Economy Spotlight series. They will assist in coordinating the programs, speakers, and community outreach efforts. They also help coordinate the series calendar and will prepare outreach and publicity materials, in coordination with the rest of the CEANYC team. They will utilize a membership relationship database (Little Green Light) to organize information and facilitate outreach communications. Ideally, they are familiar with CEANYC’s “membership recruitment language” so that the programs are opportunities to recruit and renew CEANYC membership commitments and collect member dues. 

We are looking for a candidate who has:

  • Strong project management skills and keen attention to deadlines
  • Experience with data collection, entry and management
  • Training in anti-oppression analysis and practices
  • Experience coordinating volunteers 
  • Experience working in collective or cooperative settings
  • Familiarity with consensus decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and remotely
  • Experience working in muti-racial and diverse organizations
  • Experience with data management systems like Little Green Light 
  • Experience with community organizing, including organizing phone banks and outreach plans.

Desired qualifications include: 

  • Familiarity with cooperatives and the Solidarity Economy framework, especially the cooperative landscape in New York City
  • Experience in community organizing, outreach, collaboration and coalition building
  • Spanish-language fluency 
  • Familiarity with project management software   
  • Designing and offering political education programs, particularly using a popular education frame
  • Experience training and leading volunteer teams

This position is an excellent fit for someone who needs a flexible schedule and who can handle managing multiple projects simultaneously. Hours are typically within the 9am-5pm weekday window, with the exception of programs that run on evenings or weekends (approximately 1-2 per month), and are determined with the General Coordinator and Membership and Programs Coordinator.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The SPC  supports CEANYC staff and volunteers in gathering equipment, resources and information to implement our 2024 Solidarity Economy Spotlight series. Primary duties include tracking the project budget, coordinating speakers and facilitators, organizing and participating in shareholder meetings, and ensuring all project deadlines are met.

Duties Include:

  • Programs (70%)
    • Actively supporting the implementation of CEANYC’s Sector Spotlights based on learnings from CEANYC’s long-standing program, the Cooperative Leadership Intensive 
    • Researching, proposing, and supporting the implementation of 4, two-hour  sessions every month from February to May.  
    • Proactively engaging with CEANYC membership to assess their needs and priorities, and finding co-facilitators from each sector, with the goal of ensuring that these public events are responsive to CEANYC member needs and priorities
  • Admin (30%)
    • Maintaining and strengthening CEANYC’s central member database
    • Coordinating with designers to assist in production of special projects material and merchandise
