Community gardens are a vibrant part of NYC’s solidarity economy. For decades, these community-controlled institutions have played a key role in fighting for food security in low-income neighborhoods, especially neighborhoods of color keeping up farming traditions specific to their culture. This has only deepened in the COVID-19 era. Responding to this year’s pandemic, some gardens, like the Phoenix Community Garden in central Brooklyn, expanded their food box program to provide more fresh food to elderly Black residents in the neighborhood.
If this campaign succeeds, gardens would gain legal protections through designation as Critical Environmental Areas (CEAs), much needed in the face of developers threatening to displace them.
